Low Key

We were given the assignment to make a low key photograph in my portrait class, this means that most of the photograph should be darker than middle grey. Low key photos involve a lot of subtracting and blocking of light and are the opposite of the high key photo of Kati on the last post. I would like to thank Buck for coming into the studio and letting me photograph him even though he had never met me before.

High key

This is my friend Kati, I think that she is so beautiful! Kati just graduated from the photo program at BYU and I hope that one day I can be as good as she is, you can check out her work here. I took this picture for my high key assignment and I am really happy with how it turned out.

Inspiration

This photograph was taken for an assignment in my color class when we were studying the seven color contrasts, our first assignment was a monochromatic image and this is what I came up with. I have to admit that I love it! This photo inspired me to do a series on industrial buildings for the assignments in my color class. I really enjoyed taking the assignments I was given every week and turning them into my own personal project. The rest of the buildings will be coming soon.

Little Boy at Heart

This is my friend Ethan. He is a great friend, way smart, a good drawer, he loves dirt bike racing, and is a little boy at heart. Ethan and his roommates love video games so for one of my projects I tried to make it look like Ethan was playing video games at home but I shot it in the studio. My goal was to make it look as real as possible in camera (without much post production) and this is what I ended up with. What do you think?

Studio Time

Our first assignment in my portrait class was a bridal shot, thank-you so much Stacy for coming in to the studio last second to help me out. For my first time in the studio it was not too bad and isn't Stacy gorgeous? I sure do have a beautiful best friend!!!

Something A little Different

I have more film that I would love to show but I am going to come back to it, partly because I don't know where it is right now and partly because I have to scan more of it. Since I haven't posted in so long I have a lot to catch up so I will start with this past Winter semester. This semester I took an introduction to color class and a classical portrait class, I enjoyed them both very much and really like some of the work that came out of these classes. So for now I will be showing you something a little different, I will be putting my film work aside and showing some color!

The First Portrait

This is the first portrait that I did with the 4x5 camera, I saw this man on the side of the rode and I had to take a picture of him, I am so glad that I did! I find so many details of this man so intriguing from his long white eyebrows, to his dirty hat and the oil stain on his clothes. I think my favorite part was how this man took this pose without any prompting from me, it is just so natural and I love it! I also learned a lot taking this picture, most importantly how much I love the zone system!!!

In the Beginning

These are some of the first Images that I took with the 4x5 camera, I guess when I got such a big and complex camera that I was totally uncomfortable with I took pictures of trees...and so did the rest of my class. The middle picture is one that I actually ended up never turning in but I thought I would still put it up anyways. If you really like trees, enjoy! If you are not such a big fan, don't worry I have more non tree pictures to come!

A Little of What's to Come

This semester I took a class where we used fully manual 4x5 film cameras and loved it!!! It was really nice to have to slow down and really think about every picture I took, I also had a lot of fun using the camera movements that a 4x5 can do that an SLR can't. This is my favorite image from the class, the rest of the photographs will be coming up soon!

Finals!!!

This photograph is a self portrait that I made earlier in the semester, during midterm week, for my digital imaging class. Now that it is time for finals my room is just about as messy, what can I say, when I get busy and stressed my room gets neglected, sometimes there are just more important things that need to get done!

A Couple Faces from Peru

I spent a couple of weeks this summer on a humanitarian trip to Peru. Here are two of the children that I photographed while I was there. I am sure that you will be seeing more photos from this trip over time. I loved my experience and hope to be able to photograph for humanitarian groups in the future!

Red Barn

I was up in Midway the other day photographing for a project and took this picture. I thought that this would be a good picture to start off my new Photography blog, so here it is! Oh and welcome to the blog for Allison Esther Photography!!!
